Plot
The events of the painting are developing in Brazil in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. Slavery was abolished in the state just over 10 years ago. The main characters, a mother and two daughters from the once wealthy Suarez family, who owned a coffee empire, are now forced to get used to new, harsh realities.
Women try to maintain the usual order of life in an old house, literally filled with the ghosts of the past. And these are not only memories of the past. The heroines constantly see the souls of the deceased slaves and gradually begin to feel themselves as ghosts in the new world.
Former slaves also have a hard time. They have no idea what to do with their newfound freedom, because they have no place in white society. The unfortunate are trying to restore their "humanity", which was destroyed during 4 centuries of slavery.
