Plot
The action takes place in Venice (Italy) after the Second World War. American Army Colonel Richard Cantwell is a true hero who receives the news of his illness with stubborn disdain. Determined to spend the weekend in quiet seclusion, he goes duck hunting and visits his favorite spots in Venice. As Cantwell's plans begin to crumble, a chance encounter with a young woman, Renata, who is much younger than him, begins to awaken in him the hope of healing.
Based on the last feature-length novel Hemingway published during his lifetime, Beyond the River in the Shade of the Trees captures a fleeting moment of immortality in which time stands still. The film raises questions of love, war, youth and age.
The officer was reportedly a friend of Hemingway, Colonel Buck Lanham, an award-winning soldier whose heroism the writer saw with his own eyes when he was a correspondent. And the woman was the daughter of an aristocrat whom he was carried away by.
