People have always been waiting for the end of the world. At least - since the time of John the Evangelist. The world is not safe, and we have always understood this. The good news is that during all this time, the end of the world never came. But there were good films about the Apocalypse. We present a list of the best films about the end of the world in our selection.
2012 (2012)
- year 2009
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.9; IMDb - 5.8
- USA
- fantasy, adventure, action
Ancient religions predicted this, but science (no matter which one) confirmed: 2012 will be the last! A world catastrophe will happen! And it happens: everything around suddenly starts to collapse! A young father (John Cusack) tries to save his little daughter during the death of the world. It seems that the government (no matter which one) is building some kind of ships, which is very important, since all the waters also overflowed the banks.
The end of the world from Rolland Emmerich, this Hollywood Godzilla, came out large-scale, epic, loud and with such a rich computer scale that it is not so much scary as it is pleasant to watch. It just pleases the eye how it all breaks down.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
- 2011
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.6; IMDb - 6.7
- USA
- melodrama, drama, comedy, fantasy
Humanity's rescue mission has failed, and the earth will soon collide with a giant asteroid. Dodge (Steve Carell) gets this news while sitting in the car with his wife. The wife gets up and leaves without explanation. Humanity begins to go crazy, and Dodge is about to commit suicide. When he fails, he teams up with Penny's pretty neighbor (Keira Knightley), promising to deliver her to her family. In the middle of the way, both realize that they have fallen in love.
The duet of Carell and Knightley came out not the most "chemical", but this apocalyptic road movie withstands the mood of an optimistic tragedy to the end. Love will not save everyone, but it will help someone.
These Final Hours
- year 2013
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.4; IMDb - 6.7
- Australia
- thriller, drama, fantasy
In twelve hours, the Earth will die from a global cataclysm, and this is all the time that remains for humanity. James learns that his girlfriend is pregnant and attacks her over untimely news. Dropping her, he rushes through the city to the crazy party "that ends all parties." On the way, he hears a scream and rushes to help, saving the girl Rose, who is desperately looking for her father, from the rapists.
Australian arthouse can be called a serious version of "Looking for a friend for the end of the world." There are no comedic elements here, it is a deep psychological drama, ruthless to both the characters and the audience.
The Happening
- 2008 year
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.3; IMDb - 5
- USA, India
- thriller, detective, fantasy
One unremarkable day, people everywhere begin to commit suicide. What's going on: mass insanity, hypnosis, epidemic? In addition, bees are disappearing in several states. A school teacher (Mark Wahlberg) and his wife (Zooey Deschanel) are trying to survive in the new world.
The ecological idea of Night Shyamalan, for all its originality and social utility, has not found a worthy embodiment. The film won a lot of nominations for the "Golden Raspberry" for a reason. What the director did for sure: a variety of ways to commit suicide. Thanks to them, it is interesting to watch the film, but the ecology still cannot be saved.
Outpost
- 2019 year
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.2; IMDb - 6.5
- Russia
- thriller, fantasy, action
In the future, something terrible happens on Earth, the electricity goes out and the last source of light, life and beauty remains - the capital of our homeland, outside of which everything plunges into darkness. At the last outpost of mankind, a team of special forces, military forces, geraushniks and other national heroes gathers. Ahead are popular protests and mass slaughter.
The cheerful sci-fi tracing paper from Hollywood made by the director of "Gogol" Yegor Baranov with references to all the cult science fiction films at once spoils the dialogues. While they are shooting, they wander in silence and protest with a shout of "aaa!" Also, of course, the very idea "there is no life beyond the Moscow Ring Road" is richly played.
The Day the Earth Stood Still
- 2008 year
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.2; IMDb - 5.5
- USA
- thriller, fantasy, drama
Aliens want to destroy humanity so that it stops spoiling the planet. A very handsome alien messenger (Keanu Reeves) is sent to inform people that they have the last chance to improve. People, of course, do not want to improve, but a beautiful woman scientist (Jennifer Connelly) will make the alien change his mind.
The Golden Raspberry was also given correctly in The Day's case: it is a bunch of mainstream stereotypes collected in one action movie, where good actors are forced to utter bad lines. The film, like Earth, saves Keanu Reeves: beautiful and alienated. We always knew that he was from another planet.
Armageddon
- 1998 year
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 7.7; IMDb - 6.7
- USA
- fantasy, adventure, action, thriller
A giant asteroid is flying to Earth, and the best minds of mankind come up with the idea of sending a heroic team of drillers into space to saw it.
There is no explanation as to why the anti-science fiction of Hollywood's top explosives expert Mike Bay did not receive the Golden Raspberry. These are raspberries. Cranberry! The wildest of them all! However, this is the author's favorite apocalyptic film. Bruce Willis in a white jersey. Liv Tyler in flowers. Steve Buscemi is a driller. And Peter Stormare in a fur hat and the role of a Russian cosmonaut, hammering in space with a hammer on the flight control panel: "This fucking Taiwanese technology!" With such people, no end of the world is terrible.
The Day After Tomorrow
- 2004 year
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 7.6; IMDb - 6.4
- USA
- fantasy, thriller, drama, adventure
Clouds go gloomy over New York, and crows fly across the sky. Now the climatic Apocalypse is approaching, because of which the ice melted, and one part of the world dried up, and the other was flooded and froze. A climate scientist (Dennis Quaid) is looking for a missing son (Jake Gyllenhaal) in the middle of a new ice age.
No one destroys as much as Roland Emmerich. Tornadoes, typhoons, downpours, polar ice, the Statue of Liberty swept away by the tsunami wave ... Give it global warming and it will flood everything. Give it a cold snap - it freezes. His epic could be more epic only if a squirrel appeared in it trying to grab an acorn.
Interstellar
- year 2014
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 8.5; IMDb - 8.6
- USA, UK, Canada
- fantasy, drama, adventure
There is a food crisis on Earth: due to dust storms, only corn grows, and humanity is threatened with death from hunger. A group of scientists sends a former pilot through a "wormhole" into another universe to find a suitable planet to inhabit.
Christopher Nolan's most pompous film is considered by many to be even greater fiction than Kubrick's "A Space Odyssey." Games with time, landscapes of other planets and Matthew McConaughey's stingy male tears spin their heads, making it difficult to ask the question: why, having an incredible opportunity to travel through the universe, it was impossible to settle humanity a little closer, in near-earth orbit.
The Core
- 2003 year
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.2; IMDb - 5.5
- USA, UK, Canada
- fantasy, action, thriller, adventure
A geophysicist (Aaron Eckhart) makes an incredible discovery: the Earth's core has stopped rotating. With a team of assistants, which includes a smiling maiden (Hilary Swank), he heads into the depths of the planet, where he is going to re-launch the core with a powerful explosion.
Rounding out our list of the best Apocalypse movies is a movie that rivals Emmerich in terms of destruction. Colosseum - bang! White House - bang! The Manhattan Bridge is in tatters! Swank's white-toothed smiles and Eckhart's manly square chin will save humanity. Not as cool as the drillers on the asteroid, but also cheerful.
Armageddian (The World's End)
- year 2013
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.6; IMDb - 7
- UK, USA, Japan
- comedy, fantasy, action
Once the king of school parties, and now a loser Harry King, by hook or by crook, pulls the friends of his youth to a meeting in their hometown for an alcoholic marathon, which they did not complete twenty years ago. Something in their native land looks strange, but friends are stubbornly moving towards the final point of the race - the “End of the World” pub.
Completing the Blood and Ice Cream trilogy, Edgar Wright gathers a team of the best English stars, including his favorites from the time of the cult sitcom Fucking Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. This is possibly the saddest movie about the end of the world with the Apocalypse as a metaphor for growing up and the pub as the last refuge of the soul.
End of the World 2013: Apocalypse in Hollywood (This Is the End)
- year 2013
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.0; IMDb - 6.6
- UK, USA, Japan
- comedy, fantasy
In Los Angeles, his friend Jay Baruchel (Baruchel) comes to Seth Rogan (Rogan), and they go to housewarming with James Franco (Franco). At the party, there is a disgusting uniform and Rihanna (Rihanna) sings about cowards. Disgusted by this outrage, Baruchel leaves for cigarettes, and Rogan goes with him. In the store, they see how blue rays “take” people. And then there is a terrible crash ...
The bold, carbon monoxide, self-ironic project of Seth Rogan and the crowd of his star friends is an excellent satire on Hollywood, a good way to have fun and, perhaps, stop fearing the end of the world. After all, no matter what happens, Satan with a giant penis will definitely not threaten us.
Melancholia (Melancholia)
- 2011
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 7.0; IMDb - 7.2
- Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany
- fantasy, drama
Copywriter Justine (Kirsten Dunst) is about to marry a handsome young man (Alexander Skarsgard), when she suddenly begins to dislike everything and falls into a severe depression. Her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) is trying to get out of her. Meanwhile, a mysterious planet called Melancholy is approaching the earth.
Clinical depression in the envelope of the disaster film from the maestro of arthouse Lars von Trier will seem an exotic sight for those who have passed this misfortune. Those, whom the planet Melancholy did not fly around, on the contrary, will perfectly understand what kind of state it is when you want the world to die, if only together with you.
Take Shelter
- 2011
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.8; IMDb - 7.4
- USA
- horror, thriller, drama
Construction worker Curtis (Michael Shannon) is struggling with low-paying jobs, caring for his wife and deaf daughter, and has a mentally ill mother. Either because of nerves, or for some other reason, he begins to dream about an impending catastrophe. He himself is not sure that he is not going crazy, but just in case he starts building an underground bunker.
A lot is said about the crisis of masculinity in our time, and this nervous picture, which can be interpreted as you like - from the insanity of the hero to the real Apocalypse - draws, by the forces of Shannon, just an outstanding portrait of a lost man. Atlas straightened his shoulders, but could not cope with the burden. Isn't it the end of the world?
10 Cloverfield Lane
- 2016 year
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.8; IMDb - 7.2
- USA
- thriller, drama, fantasy
The list of the best films about the apocalypse ends with a good thriller "Cloverfield, 10". The girl wakes up after a car accident and ends up in the basement of a man (John Goodman), who claims to have saved her from a chemical attack. The whole world, he insists, is poisoned, you can't go anywhere. Whether he is telling the truth or lying is impossible to know.
The paranoid, claustrophobic thriller produced by J.J. Abrams keeps the viewer in almost the same monstrous tension as the heroine. And it doesn't matter whether the world is lost or not. When John Goodman is staring at you with his sinister charisma under a hundredweight, you can already go crazy.
