A short course in "Sharp subjects"
The author of the article is insanely ashamed that he has not read the novel of the same name, but, accordingly, there is something to strive for. But there will be no comparison with the book that formed the basis of the script (see paragraph above). Therefore, who is cooler - the American writer Gillian Flynn or screenwriter Marty Noxon - will have to decide for the people who read the novel.
The main character of the series, Camilla Priker, is clearly unhappy with herself and her life. She works in a small publication, and in her free time (although not free too) she drinks a lot. Black long sweater, lost eyes and alcohol in a bottle of mineral water - this Amy Adams, who played the main role, the audience has never seen ...
Camilla's boss decides to send her on a business trip to her hometown. Who, if not her, should be interested in killing little girls in Wind Gap. The idea of the editor is a journalistic investigation in the hometown of "one-story America", where everyone knows each other. In fact, this is the act of a friend who sends his unlucky young co-worker to meet her own demons, for until she meets them face to face. The main character is in no hurry to visit the family, whom she has not seen for almost half her life. And it soon becomes clear why.
"Camilla, by the way have you already stopped somewhere?" - asks her mother. And immediately a chill runs through the skin, as well as from everything that happens in this cute and standard-looking town.
It's not even about the murders - the fact is that almost every character in the series causes a subconscious rejection. In general, they are not bad, but why are they so nasty? You involuntarily begin to feel sorry for Camilla and want her to leave there as soon as possible.
We must understand that no one, absolutely no one, evokes sympathy: neither the honored sheriff, nor the most respected Priker family in the area, nor teenagers, nor adult ladies. It seems a very honest and sweet detective who came from Kansas City. But even then, perhaps, only because Chris Messina who played him is too charming. Even Camilla herself is sometimes alienating.
But you need to somehow cope with this and solve many mysteries:
- Who killed two teenage girls and why?
- What caused the awful flashbacks that happen to the main character at every step?
- What the hell is going on in the seemingly calm Wind Gap?
- Is there a mythical woman in white?
- Why does the expression "home sweet home" sound like a mockery to some?
- Why shouldn't Camilla be given sharp objects?
But the viewers will have to answer these and many other questions episode after episode on their own.
A little about the cast
The role of Camilla Priker is called at the moment perhaps the most striking image created by Amy Adams. But this actress has long been forced to talk about herself. She has two Golden Globes and an Oscar nomination in her piggy bank, and Amy is hardly going to stop there. She plays Camille with full dedication, and the viewer sometimes hurts almost physically for the main character of the series.
The main character's mother, Adora Priker, was performed by the equally stellar and talented Patricia Clarkson. A cold woman with a cruel look in this case is played just perfect.
A young visiting detective performed by Chris Messina can break more than one girl's heart. You sympathize with him and want to help. He really looks contrasting in comparison with the "local" characters.
In addition, many young Hollywood "stars" who played the roles of Emma, John Keane and other teenagers will be able to say over time that Sharp Objects became the real point of their career, despite the fact that the young actors have more than one role. Camilla in her youth is played by Sophia Lillis, who has already made people talk about herself after the release of It and Gretel and Hansel.
Separately, it is worth bowing at the feet of the composer, who has created a wonderful musical range from psychedelic to ageless classics. It is music that allows you to immerse yourself in Wind Gap with your head and conveys the pain and emotions of the characters.
