Andrei Tarkovsky called Nikolai Grinko in his memoirs "a gentle and noble actor and person." He endowed all his heroes with softness and warmth. Grinko was filming until the last days. The actor died of leukemia in 1989 and is buried in Kiev at the Baikovo cemetery.
