Radu Jude is widely regarded as one of the most prolific and intriguing directors of the so-called Romanian "new wave". In his works, he often refers to the legacy of the dictatorial regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. The plot of the new film "Capital Letters" with a release date in 2020 raises the problem of the confrontation between the individual and the totalitarian state; the actors involved in the project are already known, and an official trailer has appeared.
IMDb rating - 6.9.
Plot
The events in the picture are presented in the form of two interconnected storylines. One of them is a true story, restored from materials stored in the police archives. It tells the story of a 16-year-old teenager Mugur Kalinescu, who in 1981 wrote in chalk on the wall of a building belonging to a committee of the Romanian Communist Party, protest messages against the Ceausescu regime. The guy immediately found himself under close surveillance by the secret police, then was detained and interrogated.
The second line is a kind of background for the history of Mugur. It shows official footage from the life of Romanian society during the reign of Ceausescu. On the screen, joyful pictures of a "happy" life pass in succession, which are suddenly replaced by terrifying scenes of interrogation and torture.
