2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
- Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 8.0, IMDb - 8.3
- Director: Stanley Kubrick
Our selection begins with this picture for a reason. Filmed back in 1968, it is still considered the best example of science fiction and the benchmark for all films that somehow tell about space adventures. Christopher Nolan, director of Interstellar, admitted in an interview that it was "A Space Odyssey" that served as a source of inspiration for him. For this reason, it is easy to trace some similarities between the two films.
The plot of the cult tape is built around a group of astronauts who fly towards Jupiter on the Discovery spacecraft. On board the spacecraft, in addition to the crew members, there is also a state-of-the-art computer with high intelligence and programmed to perform the most complex tasks. Their goal is to understand how the mysterious "monoliths" found on the Earth and the Moon and sending radiation to a distant planet are related. During a long journey, the heroes of "Odyssey" are faced with inexplicable phenomena and find themselves in the most difficult situations.
Contact (1997)
- Genre: Fantasy, Detective, Thriller, Drama

The main character Eleanor, played by the brilliant Jodie Foster, lost both parents in her youth and since then she lived with the hope of someday seeing them in another reality. Since childhood, she was fond of astronomy, so she chose the appropriate profession.
Once, like young Murph from Interstellar, Ellie received mysterious signals from space. With the help of a friend and colleague Kent Clarke, she was able to figure out the message, which turned out to be encrypted blueprints and instructions for making an intergalactic ship. Without doubting herself, the brave heroine decided on a space journey. After passing through the "wormhole", Ellie found herself on an unknown planet, lost in deep space, and came into contact with a representative of an extraterrestrial civilization, who took the form of her father.
It is noteworthy that one of the central characters in this film was played by Matthew McConaughey, who brilliantly played the role of Cooper in Interstellar.

As in the Nolan brothers' film, the conditions of life on the overpopulated Earth became unacceptable for the further existence of mankind.
To avoid extinction, people are forced to look for new habitats. As a result of research carried out outside the solar system, scientists are finding an exoplanet called Tanis, which may become a new home for humans. A ship is sent from Earth on a long journey, on board of which there are more than 60 thousand settlers and crew members immersed in suspended animation. They will have to spend 123 years in outer space, and during this time anything can happen.

The actions of this picture unfold on Earth. Once over the surface of the planet in 12 different places, huge space objects appear, resembling shells. Trying to understand the reasons for their appearance, special services of different countries attract specialists from different fields of science, including linguists, to work.
Louise Banks is one of them. She manages to make contact with two aliens, and gradually a woman scientist masters the structure of an extraterrestrial language. It soon becomes clear that guests from deep space have come to help people and unite them. In addition, they teach Louise to perceive time as another dimension in which the past, present and future are one. Having mastered this skill, the heroine, like Cooper from Interstellar, managed to change the course of events and prevent a global catastrophe.

Not sure which sci-fi paintings to see? Here is another original story from the list of the best films similar to Interstellar (2014), with a description of the similarity of the storyline.
The main character of the tape, Mark Watney, as part of a research expedition, works on the surface of Mars. But because of the impending storm, the mission has to be urgently scaled down. As a result of a tragic accident, Mark remains on the red planet. Just like the brave explorers from Christopher Nolan's film, he will have to spend several years alone before the rescue mission arrives. A funny coincidence is the fact that the main roles in "The Martian" were played by Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain, who played Professor Mann in "Inrestellar" and the matured Murph Cooper.
Sunshine (2007)
- Genre: Adventure, Science Fiction, Thriller
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 7.3, IMDb - 7.2

But this time the solution is not hidden in the depths of the universe, but in the solar system itself. The Earth is gradually covered with an ice shell and is on the verge of a global catastrophe, since the Sun has been extinguishing for many years. The only hope for salvation is to "recharge" the main luminary of the system. For this purpose, a special space mission has been organized. The crew of the Ikar-2 spacecraft must fly as close as possible to the dying star and drop a giant bomb on it, the explosion of which will cause a nuclear reaction and restart the Sun.
"To the Stars" / Ad Astra (2019)
- Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Drama, Thriller, Detective
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 6.4, IMDb - 6.6

The plot of this fantastic project also has some similarities with the Interstellar tape. In the near future, the Earth and the rest of the planets of the solar system are in danger. From space strange bursts of destructive energy periodically come, called "Impulse".
During one of these bursts, a huge antenna that reaches the upper atmosphere and is used to search for extraterrestrial life was completely destroyed. As a result of the disaster, many people were killed and injured. NASA Major Roy McBride, who was on the antenna at the time of the release, survived by pure chance. Some time later, the government instructs him, together with other astronauts, to understand the causes of the cataclysm. On board the spacecraft, the team goes into outer space.

But one day, as a result of a computer failure, one of the cryocapsules opens, and Jim Preston, who was sleeping in it, wakes up. The man realizes with horror that he is the only one who is awake on the ship, and there are still 90 years of flight ahead. Oblivion (2013)
- Genre: Adventure, Science Fiction, Romance, Action, Thriller
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 7.2, IMDb - 7.0
- Director: Joseph Kosinski
If you are looking for films that are very similar to Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, we recommend checking out Oblivion. And although the action of this picture is not connected with a journey through the Universe, the pictures still have something in common.
The main idea of both projects is the struggle for the survival of the entire human race. The action takes place at the end of the 21st century. About 60 years ago, alien invaders destroyed the moon and then attacked Earth. As a result of destructive events, almost all of the earth's population was destroyed, and the survivors managed to take refuge on the huge spaceship "Tet", and later settled on one of the moons of Saturn.
Only drone maintenance technicians remained on Earth, guarding stations for converting water into thermonuclear energy from an alien attack. One of them is Jack. He doesn't remember anything from his past, as his memory has been erased for security reasons. But over and over again he has the same dream, in which a girl unfamiliar to him is constantly present. Trying to figure out what is happening, Jack soon realizes that the reality in which he lives is not real. And people still live on Earth and are still fighting aliens.
"Gravity" / Gravity (2013)
- Genre: Fantasy, Drama, Thriller
- Rating: KinoPoisk - 7.5, IMDb - 7.7
- Director: Alfonso Cuarón.
After reading a brief description of the plot, you will understand why this tape was included in our list of the best films similar to Interstellar (2014), and how they are similar. The events of "Gravity" unfold in space at an altitude of about 600 km above the Earth. But the heroes do not seek to save the planet from extinction, they have a completely different task: setting up equipment at the automatic space observatory Hubble.
During the repair work, a terrible disaster occurs: a cloud of space debris destroys the Shuttle, on which the team of astronauts arrived in orbit. Only the leader of the expedition, Matt Kowalski, and Ph.D. Ryan Stone survived. Just like Cooper and Brand from Nolan's movie, they are forced to float in a black void with no connection to Earth and no hope of salvation. By the way, it is best to watch this picture alone in order to fully feel the depth of despair of a person on the threshold of eternity.
