Rumors of plans for a sequel to Crazy Rich Asians emerged immediately after the first installment in 2018. The sequel is titled "Wealthy Chinese Girlfriend" and is based on the second book by novelist Kevin Kwan in his "Asians" series. The second part is expected to focus on the relationship between Charlie and Astrid and the search for Rachel and Kitty Pong's father, and takes place two years after the events of the first. In January 2019, Awkwafina was interviewed in which she said that there was still no script for the sequel, and production filming had not yet begun.
According to Town and Country magazine, filming and premiere of the film were scheduled no earlier than 2020. Filming is expected to be postponed until at least the end of this year.
