If suddenly a viewer unfamiliar with the plot is advised to watch The Personal History of David Copperfield in 2020, he will think: “This is probably some adventure movie about the famous illusionist.” Oh, how much he will be wrong. Few of today's viewers remember that David Copperfield is the protagonist of the novel by Charles Dickens. And the film will tell exactly about this hero, and not about the famous magician.
In detail
By the way, when Dickens wrote his novel, he took many moments from his own life, so the work can be called a partial autobiography. The created film project tried to follow the original source as closely as possible.
The film can be described as "notes within notes". This adaptation of Dickens' novel is presented in rainbow colors, you can even call it fabulous. But at the same time, it is not devoid of sad moments. By the implementation of the conceived, the project resembles "The Greatest Showman", only here it is more thought out in terms of the script, and even manages to do practically without musical accompaniment.
The charms of the cast
Before talking about the plot, you need to get acquainted with the heroes of the picture and with those who played them. Just one look at the list of actors who starred in the film is enough to understand that the project is worth watching for the sake of talented Hollywood stars who have played their roles so brilliantly:
- A rustic and slightly eccentric main character, who loves to record everything that happens to him, performed by Virgo Patel;
- His stepfather's domineering and violent sister, played by Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie.
- Cheerful rascal with Micawber accordion performed by Peter Capaldi.
- Quite strange, but at the same time not devoid of charm, the cousin of the protagonist's aunt in the embodiment of Hugh Laurie.
- And the main highlight of the film is "a wonderful woman, very kindness" Aunt Trotwood, played by the magnificent and charismatic Tilda Swinton.
And all these actors did an excellent job. They reincarnated as colorful characters, and each left their mark on the history of David Copperfield. We can say that if some other actors played in the film, it is unlikely that it would have gone so well.
Of course, the project is worth watching not only for the sake of famous Hollywood actors. A good script and a well-shot picture with beautiful scenery really deserved high reviews. The film won several awards, including the BAFTA award, well deserved - for the good work of the entire production team. And if our viewers have a tendency not to trust critics, then there is no need to worry about this picture - high reviews about it are justified.
Special mission of characters
A certain cyclical nature can be traced in the plot: the carefree days of the main character are replaced by poverty, then again by cheerful and happy moments, and then again by poverty. And the so-called weed people are to blame for all that. First, they were brother and sister Murdstone, because of whom the young hero lost his childhood and went to work at a shoe polish factory. And then another family couple appears in the plot - Uriya Hip and his mother, who did dark deals and practically robbed the main character and his aunt.
In general, the film is a collection of several characters who know how to draw attention to themselves (here it is due to Mr. Dickens and his masterful writing skills). Each has its own story, each is a representative of different social classes with their own unique thinking and vision of the world. Only after meeting all these characters, David Copperfield finds himself, becomes who he is - a writer.
This is the whole beauty of the film and its charm - the creators were able to accurately (maybe slightly embellished) present the viewers with a picture of that time, and the actors perfectly convey the character of the characters described by Dickens. This picture can really be called a fairy tale, and a beautiful fairy tale, albeit a little sad, but at the same time instructive.
