Catherine the Great will continue her reign on Hulu in Season 2 of The Great, with an episode release date of 2021. The comedy-drama, in which Elle Fanning plays Catherine and Nicholas Hoult plays Peter III, will return with new episodes and storylines, but the same cast and amazing crew. The series still does not pretend to be a historically accurate retelling of Catherine's life. But there is some truth in every joke. The director looks at the rise to power of Catherine the Great through a flirty and feminist gaze.

Season 1
Plot
The satirical show tells about the history of the ascent of Catherine the Great and her formation as a female ruler with the longest reign in the history of Russia, as well as a few random facts from her life.
In the season 1 finale, Ekaterina turns 20, and she decides to kill Peter on the same day. Her plans to eliminate her rival are complicated by his birthday present - a visit from her idol Voltaire (Dustin Demri-Burns). When Catherine attacks Peter with a knife, he misinterprets her coup attempt as a prelude. But this confusion is sorted out when the maid Marial tells Peter about Katherine's plan and that she is pregnant with her heir.
In the end, Catherine sacrifices her companion Leo for the sake of the country. Catherine and Peter are connected by mutual delusions: he, that she will finally fall in love with him, and she, that he will allow her to rule!

Executive Producer Marian McGowan said they have already charted several seasons of the show:
“We originally split the show into six seasons. Thus, we believe that there is enough material to guide the audience until Catherine becomes an elderly woman. "
Project writer Tony McNamara shared with Deadline that the idea for "The Great" came to him by accident:
“I didn't know much about her, except that maybe she fell off a horse. And then I heard something about how Catherine supports the Age of Enlightenment. I studied a lot of materials and she seemed like an amazing character - really complex and really modern in many ways. So I wanted to write a script for the series about her. But it was important to write in such a way that I wanted to see it myself. "
Actress Elle Fanning said that she knows little about the real Catherine:
“Like Tony, I only knew about the horse accident. And I knew that she was the Empress of Russia. But thanks to the show, I learned a lot more about what she did and that she is actually a feminist icon of the time. "
